GMRS Antennas

(4 products)

  • GMRS antennas operate on the UHF 462–467 MHz band — pick one tuned specifically for that range
  • Most GMRS antennas use an NMO mount — the industry-standard 3/4" stud connection for mobile UHF antennas
  • Best for off-road convoys, overlanding, family/group travel, and basecamp-to-vehicle comms
  • For a deeper dive, see our guide on choosing the right antenna for your radio

About GMRS Antennas

The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is a licensed UHF two-way radio service regulated by the FCC, designed for short-distance, two-way voice communication between family, friends, and small groups. A GMRS antenna is purpose-built to resonate on the GMRS frequency band — and just like with CB, the antenna (not the radio) is the single biggest factor in how far your signal will actually reach. Pairing a quality, properly tuned GMRS antenna with your mobile or base radio is the difference between crystal-clear convoy comms and frustrating dead air.

Frequency Band

GMRS operates on 22 channels in the UHF spectrum, spanning 462.5500–462.7250 MHz (mobile/simplex) and 467.5500–467.7250 MHz (repeater inputs). Any antenna sold as a GMRS antenna is tuned to perform across this 462–467 MHz window. Many GMRS antennas are also dual-band or wideband UHF designs that cover the adjacent 70cm amateur band (440–450 MHz), making them a flexible choice if you also run a HAM radio.

NMO Connection Type

The overwhelming majority of mobile GMRS antennas use an NMO (New Motorola) mount — a low-profile, 3/4-inch threaded stud that screws into a matching NMO mount base. NMO is the standard across public safety, commercial fleet, and consumer UHF radios because it offers excellent weather sealing, a clean coax run through the vehicle body, and quick antenna swaps without disturbing the cable. Pair an NMO antenna with a roof, fender, hood, trunk-lip, magnetic, or bull bar NMO mount to match your install. Some compact GMRS handhelds and base antennas instead use SO-239 / PL-259 connectors, so always confirm your mount's stud type before ordering.

Best Uses

GMRS shines anywhere you need reliable, license-friendly comms over a few miles of line-of-sight: off-roading and Jeep convoys, overlanding, hunting, farm and ranch work, neighborhood watch, RV caravans, family road trips, and short-range basecamp-to-vehicle coordination. Because GMRS is a UHF service, signals punch through dense brush, buildings, and obstacles better than VHF or CB — at the cost of slightly shorter open-terrain range. With a high-gain mobile antenna mounted high and clear, a 50-watt GMRS radio can reliably push 5–25 miles vehicle-to-vehicle, and far further through the network of FCC-licensed GMRS repeaters now active across the U.S.

Power Allocations

The FCC sets specific power limits for each GMRS channel group, and your antenna needs to be rated to handle them:

  • Channels 1–7 (462 MHz, shared with FRS): up to 5 watts
  • Channels 8–14 (467 MHz interstitial, FRS-shared): limited to 0.5 watts — handheld use only, no detachable antennas allowed
  • Channels 15–22 (462 MHz main): up to 50 watts for mobile and base stations
  • Repeater inputs (467 MHz): up to 50 watts when transmitting into a GMRS repeater

Most mobile GMRS antennas sold today are rated for at least 50–200 watts, which gives plenty of headroom for the strongest legal GMRS radios like the Midland MXT500 and MXT575. A GMRS license from the FCC is required to transmit (one license covers your whole immediate family, valid for 10 years, no test required).

Picking the Right GMRS Antenna

Three factors drive GMRS antenna performance: gain (measured in dB — higher gain flattens the signal pattern for more range on flat ground, lower gain works better in hilly or mountainous terrain), mounting height (the higher and more centered on a metal ground plane, the better), and tuning (a GMRS-specific antenna will always outperform a general UHF or scanner antenna).
