Quick Overview

The DX 979 is Galaxy's smallest SSB-capable radio and the only SSB model with a backlit display. Galaxy's StarLite backlit faceplate illuminates all lettering, making fumbling in the dark for the right knob a thing of the past. In addition to the long-range performance SSB makes possible, the Galaxy DX 979 packs a full feature set, including variable output power, RF gain, PA, high-SWR alert, mic gain, clarifier control (delta tune), talk back and automatic SWR calibration for simpler antenna tuning. The oversize, easy-to-read illuminated meter measures modulation, power and SWR. An external frequency counter can be easily added using the built-in port. To see how the DX 979 compares to other Galaxy radios, please see this Galaxy Feature Comparison Chart.

NOTE: Galaxy requires customers to ship all radios needing repair or warranty work directly to the manufacturer (Galaxy) after purchase. Due to this policy, we are unable to accept returns on Galaxy radios.

    Best Radio I've Owned

    Review by Tyler
    Overall Rating
Bought this radio about a month ago, and absolutely love it. In my truck using just a simple mag mount antenna, I got 1.1:1-1.3:1 SWR readings across the board out of the box (and the built in/self-calibrating SWR meter is a wonderful feature), dead key right around 4 watts AM and it'll swing up to around 12. The variable dim on the radio is perfect, because the blue LEDs are extremely bright when the dimmer knob is turned all the way up and could be a bit distracting at night, but they can be turned down easily to a level that's comfortable. The StarLite faceplate is wonderful, absolutely no problems seeing the controls at night.

Haven't noticed any problems with drifting, although the clarifier is extremely touchy on receive-not necessarily a bad thing on SSB. Only thing I wish it had is a frequency counter, but one can easily be added thanks to the plug on the back for it. Receiver is very sensitive, but the noise limiter/noise blanker do a great job of cutting out the interference. All in all, I'm extremely happy with this radio. This was my first Galaxy purchase, and definitely won't be my last. (Posted on April 4, 2014)

A little big but a great radio

    Review by Orlo
    Overall Rating
So far everything I've seen/done with the radio has worked well. It's big, but in fairness all the SSB rigs are, I have a 2547 base station so this isn't my first Galaxy unit (won't be my last either). The starlit background is a nice touch and one of the things that swung me to the 979 vs the 949. At night it's really nice to see the controls. I didn't need the frequency counter of the 959. Good tone quality, sturdy feel to the controls. For my installation the straight out mic cord hit my shifter so I put a 90 degree mic cord on it.

I still need to use it a lot more to give a full review. One Nit I have (real minor) is there is a little red dot on the clarifier helping you know when it's centered - I'd prefer a little tab on the dial so I can 'feel' the center. No biggie. I haven't used SSB enough to experience the drift but that's pretty common with Galaxy's but that's not a biggie for me either. Worth mentioning also is the meter is actually USABLE. With my old eyes I can clearly see it for SWR calibration, power, etc. It works well. The meter on a lot of rigs is so small that I find them hard or impossible to read, not so with the 979.
