Perfect kit for my CB needs!

Review by James T.
Overall Rating
I wanted a decent CB radio for my pickup. I looked around online and I got pretty much overwhelmed with technical info, fancy gizmos and expensive stuff that I thought I didn't really need.

I got to Right Channel and found what I was looking for. Straight up information and a package that was put together for exactly what I needed. A no-nonsense good radio and matching antenna. There was plenty of information for antenna tuning and radio installation too. Great!

I chose the Cobra 29 LTD and four-foot Firestik with the pickup stake hole mount. Exactly what I needed. A good radio, antenna and how to install it.

I had to think a bit about where to put the antenna. My bed has a tonneau cover so the straight stake hole mount wouldn't work. I got the overhang stake hole mount so it would fit under the tonneau. One thing to mention here, that mount bottom piece had to come off completely and re-orient 90 degrees because that is the way the stake hole is, not the way it is packaged.

Anyway, I figured that out and it fits perfectly into the stake hole. I scraped some paint off the bottom of the underside of the stake hole but my multimeter wasn't getting a ground. So I had to add the ground wire to the pre punched hole in the mount. The rest of the installation was pretty much straightforward. I mounted the radio on the back of the center console. By doing that, the antenna connection was tight to the floor. I didn't like that but luckily, I already had a right angle antenna connector and that worked perfectly. The rest of the antenna wire I pulled together like they said in a yarn shape and put a tie wrap around it to minimize RF coil shape.

I tuned the antenna in the widest open space I knew, a nearby beach parking lot. Right in the middle, no light poles around. Funny, in that big parking lot somebody came up to me and asked me what I was doing, measuring the wind? Ha ha I had to laugh. I used the swr meter right on the radio and after a few trips in and out, got decent readings well below 2. I would have never had gotten that right if Right Channel Radios didn't have those great instructions on their site. I know it's not hard, but if you don't know how to do it, then it doesn't get done right.

As far as the radio goes, the Cobra 29 LTD is perfect for me. Rf gain, dynamike, sw meter, noise reduction. Everything you need is there. Reception is great and everyone says I sound good. There is plenty of volume. I only keep it around a little above halfway and it's fine.

Why did I get a CB in this time of cell phone and GPS? Well, I got this radio because I drive I95 and I can hear the Truckers talk about traffic or road debris ahead, wako drivers, and stuff you don't get on traffic reports or on the GPS. What do you do with a cell phone? Who do you call? I also see a lot of trucks with their trailer lights out, dragging a chain, or have a blown tire on their trailer and stuff like that. Just two days after I had that radio in, there was a major wreck on the opposite side of the road. I was able to tell truckers to get off the exit before they could to go around it.

CB radios are not a thing of the past, they are just as fun and useful now as they ever were. I find out that there are a few jokers and showboaters, but Sunday morning I drove and thought the radio wasn't working. Quiet with squelch all the way down. So I call for a radio check and someone comes right back "Your radio's working." So it goes to show you even if it's quiet, people are listening.

Thanks to Right Channel Radios for their help and putting together a package that is perfect for my needs.

Great CB package!

I wanted a good CB for my '06 Silverado and didn't want to buy everything separate. I stumbled upon this website, decided to get the whole package and it is exactly what I wanted. Everything is included in this package. And it's really easy to set up. I chose the hood mount for my antenna, really easy and convenient! The only hard part was putting the bolt in to secure the mount because my hands are too big ( you need small ones to make it easier). Other than that, I love it! I always talk to truckers loud and clear, and my range goes to about 4 miles with a 3 foot antenna. I recommend this to anyone looking for an affordable CB set! (Posted on February 9, 2013)
