Everything You Need to Get Up And Running

Review by Stu Olson
Overall Rating
The Cobra kit comes with everything you need to get yourself up and running. Along with the Cobra radio came the 3-way antenna mount, SWR meter and patch cable, a 4' Wilson Flex, Fire-Stik coax cable, and an external speaker. Right Channel Radios carries a large selection of Firestik products, and offers three different Firestik mounting options with the Cobra Jeep Kit.

The Cobra 75 WX ST is a 40-channel CB that requires a very small footprint. The complete radio fits in your hand making it ideal for compact installations. It also provides you with 10 NOAA National Weather channels, full channel scan, dual watch, and an illuminated LCD display for easy viewing. This is an extremely popular radio with Jeep and off-road vehicle owners as it takes so little space and is much more convenient than mounting a traditional full-size CB in a small cab. The handset is connected to a small mounting/interface box that can be tucked under the seat or dash for a very clean installation. The remote mounted interface box provides fused power, an antenna coax connection, a jack for an external speaker, and a connector for the handheld radio unit.

The Cobra offers a function called Dual Watch. It allows you to monitor two CB channels at the same time. Channel 16 is automatically assigned as one of the channels and the user gets to select the 2nd channel. A feature like this is great on the trail as you can listen on the official "trail run channel" while you shoot the breeze with a friend or two on a different channel....all the time being able to respond to the "more important" announcements/comments that occur on the trail run channel. Ham radio operators have had this feature in their mobile FM radios for quite some time and it really is a nice feature. Congrats to Cobra for making it available in this radio.

The Cobra also provides coverage of all ten NOAA weather channels. These are VHF frequencies and you need to be within radio distance of a NOAA transmitter. If your wheeling area falls within the coverage area of a NOAA transmitter, you are in luck and can monitor the weather 24 hours a day.

An "Instant Channel 19" feature is also programmed into the radio. This allows you to immediately access Channel 19 with just a push of a the button. You don't have to scroll through the channels with the up/down channel buttons in order to get there. Channel 19 is heavily used on the highways by the big truck drivers.

Last, but not least, you can tell the Cobra to scan all 40 of the channels. This works nicely if you are driving cross country and you are bored out of your mind and want to see if there is any activity on any of the CB channels. Again, it beats the heck out of manually checking each and every channel using the up/down channel buttons.

To keep weight at a minimum, the included Wilson FLEX antenna is built on a 1/4" tapered fiberglass rod using 22 gauge silver plated wire and covered with a black polyolefin protective covering. Not only does this make for a light weight antenna but it makes for a great amount of flexibility. You should realize that no antenna is bulletproof and those used on the trail will certainly get more abuse than one spending its years going cross-country on a big rig. That being said, I've found that the more flexible the antenna is, the better survival odds it has. I'm not a big fan of antenna springs and appreciate the slim and trim appearance of the Wilson Flex antenna design.

The SWR meter supplied with the Cobra Off-Road Kit is very easy to use. On the rear panel of the meter are two RF connectors. The front panel is marked to indicate which connector gets the antenna cable and which connector gets the short 12" jumper attached to it and the remove interface box.

How does it work?

As soon as we had power to the unit, we switched it over to 19 and we heard a conversation between two CBers. So yes, it seemed to do quite well. NOAA came through loud and clear as well (we have a pretty good NOAA transmitter here in the Phoenix area).

We've not had it on the trail yet but I see no reason it won't perform much like the other Cobra 75 radios I've shared some trail time with. They usually have a good clear signal as long as their antenna system is properly adjusted and all the connections are tight. (Written 9/30/2008) (Posted on February 16, 2012)

Works great, crystal clear

Review by Mike B
Overall Rating
I bought this kit because I'm new to the whole CB thing and wanted a complete set-up and because the CB itself is small enough that I can take the unit out when I'm done with it so it doesn't tempt anyone to steal it.

The kit is as complete as can be. The radio (Cobra 75 WXST) works great and is crystal clear when transmitting and receiving. The fact that this kit includes a SWR meter as well as an external speaker makes this kit a great buy. I received everything in one package and didn't have to run to a store to buy anything else.

The antenna (4 ft Wilson) has worked great and was very easy to tune with the included SWR meter. The mount is a quality stainless steel unit that can be mounted just about anywhere. The coax cable is more than long enough and looks like its good quality.

There's a few guys in our Jeep club looking at this kit now just because the Cobra radio takes up zero dash/console space (all the controls are in the hand set, and the the rest is in a box tucked away out of sight) and is easily removable (just unscrew the handset from the plug of the hidden box).

Would definitely recommend this kit to anyone looking for a good, compact set-up. (Written 10/1/2008) (Posted on February 16, 2012)

Great kit and online resources are helpful

Review by Brett B
Overall Rating
I was looking for a CB that would easily fit into the cab of my Jeep without becoming an obstruction for me or my passenger to knock our head or knees on so the Cobra 75 WX ST quickly became the obvious choice. Beside being compact, with no large radio to mount, the ability to detach the radio/hand set is an outstanding capability for when I'm just driving around town without a top - no worries about someone stealing it if they can't see it.

The unit arrived with all mounting hardware, radio, antenna cable, SWR meter and antenna within a couple of days of my order. Everything was in good shape with no shipping damage.

Once everything arrived I got it installed and tested with no problems. The on-line resources were great. They walked me through the installation and tuning/troubleshooting of the antenna. The system was operational in no time.

Since installation, I have been on several 4X4 runs and have nothing but great communication out of the system. I did lots of research prior to buying a CB and this was, by far, the best price for such a high quality system. The only downside for Jeep owners is the antenna mount. I ditched the one that came in the kit and went with a stainless steel mount that mounts behind the tail light. Even with this extra expense, the kit was somewhat less expensive than if I had purchased all the components separately from another vendor. I recommend this kit to all my friends. Fit well on 80 Series Land Cruiser

Review by Garry Hill
Overall Rating
The kit came with everything I needed and integrated very well into my 80 series LandCruiser. The external speaker mounted nicely behind the factory subwoofer grille in the center console for a nice clean look. Everything works well together and I have used the included SWR meter to help friends tune their systems.

The only con I can think of is I have to remove the center console to connect the SWR meter. I put everything together and then realized where I had to connect the meter. (Written 1/5/2009) (Posted on February 16, 2012)

Cobra 75 Kit = Easy Install!!!!

Review by Robert A
Overall Rating
I bought the Jeep and off-road CB kit hoping that it would be a little easier to install. I wasn't disappointed. It took a few minutes to decide where to put the mounting box, and after that, it all fell into place. The antenna mount is well designed and ruggedly built. The instructions were excellent, and after taking about five minutes to adjust the antenna with the SWR meter, it was ready to go. This kit gets my highest recommendation! (Written 3/12/2009)

Awesome - Takes up no room, highly recommended

I bought the Cobra WX ST CB radio as part of the off-road kit. I chose the 4' Wilson Flex antenna and Firestik three-way stainless mounting bracket, which I used to attach the antenna to the toolbox in my Toyota pickup. The setup is awesome. The radio, after tuning (which was well described on the antenna package, and online in Right Channel Radios' technical video section), works very well. Plus, the radio takes up hardly any room! I use the radio when I'm on the highway for traffic reports etc., and for up-to-date weather details on fishing trips. And it will be used when I'm off-road this summer. I really recommend this package, 5/5! (Written 4/29/2009)

Nice kit with useful online tech tutorials

Review by Tom N

I finished installing it today and all works great. Packaging everything together really makes things a lot easier. I was able to use the hood mount perfectly on my spare tire carrier just so you know. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's asked if you have a spare tire mount available. I have after market rims with additional backspacing so it worked great. I think with the stock tires/rims there wouldn't be space for it because the tire sits much closer to the tailgate.

Your online help/tutorial section was amazing and came in handy more than a few times during install! (Written 5/11/2009) (Posted on February 16, 2012)

Nice fit on my JK Wranger

Installed in my Jeep JK a few weeks ago. The "hood mount" worked perfectly on my spare tire mount. The coax provided was perfect for routing through the tail gate since the connector is not soldered on yet. This is by far the best "kit" out there since it comes with the SWR meter and external speaker in addition to the essentials. The web tutorials and customer service/support were outstanding to help with install questions. Love the Wilson Flex but would have gone with the 4' for a little extra range if my garage door height wasn't in the way! (Written 6/1/2009)

Slick All-in-on Kit, GREAT service from RCR!!

Review by Matt
Overall Rating
I bought the Cobra 75 WX ST kit with the 4' antenna and the Jeep hood mount for my '97 Jeep TJ. I read about the kit on www.stu-offroad.com and I was absolutely amazed at how quickly the kit was delivered. It was so nice not having to find the parts and order them separately. The included SWR meter made tuning my radio very easy. Everything works great and takes up very little space. I have used my radio quite often while on the highway and while off-roading. It works better than any of my friends' CBs. The only downside to this radio is the need to be careful with it since everything is built into the handset. But, I've dropped it a few times and it still works.

Although I had very limited interaction with Right Channel Radio's customer service, the interaction I had was excellent. About two days after I got my kit, I received an email from the sales manager following up with me to make sure my order was correct and the install went well. I would recommend the Cobra 75 WX ST kit and Right Channel Radios to anyone. (Written 7/17/2009). (Posted on February 16, 2012)
