Works well on my Jeep TJ

Review by Christopher A
Overall Rating
As a Jeep TJ owner, I often wheel with other Jeep enthusiasts. The need for reliable "Jeep to Jeep" communication became a paramount issue recently. After some research and forum walking, it became apparent that many other wheelers use the venerable CB radio to communicate with other trail riders. And the equipment source that kept showing up in threads was Right Channel. Well, I visited their site and ended up placing and
order for a Uniden Bearcat PC-78 Elite, a 4' Firestik antenna and FireRing FME coax.

I had been looking at a Cobra 75 WX St, but opted instead to go "old school" and get a full featured model. The Uniden PC-78 turned out to be just about infinitely adjustable. Sure, it has a bigger form factor, but mounted to the roof of my Jeep, I had plenty of room to work with. The Firestik antenna was the FS variety, and could be tuned at the end. This was very handy, and the only way to go in my opinion. And the FireRing coax just mad interfacing the two so much easier. A FireRing Compatible CB Antenna Stud rounded out the system.

Delivery was very fast, but while I waited I brushed up on what I thought I needed to know about installs, etc., on their web CB Radio Resources. I had no idea about tuning CB systems, but had it all in the noggin when the time came to put it in. Glad I did, because it all went perfect, and the tuning was spot on. Now I use the system routinely to talk with fellow Jeepers on-trail. In fact, my setup bests many other "tossed-in" jobs. Now I find myself referring others to Right Channel for how-to info. The only down side to my outfit is I can barely hear distant fellow Jeepers, but they can sure hear me! Thanks! Written (9/30/2010)

So Far, So Good

Built a new antenna mount and needed the added clearance the Firering provides. I did not try to separate the FME connector since it was not required to do so for my installation, but at the time of purchase, I wasn't sure of that. So, I chose this cable. I read the reviews and I was careful in tightening down the bolt and stud so as not to damage the Firering end. Overall I'm pleased with the cable so far. Time will tell how good it really is. When I got this cable, it seemed very good and well built. I managed to run this through my car - FJ Cruiser - without any problems. When mounting my CB, I accidentally pulled the whole adapter off, (full size and the part that stays on the cable). After I fixed it with electrical tape, the cable worked perfectly and I really liked it. I would definitely recommend this cable! (Posted on February 7, 2013)

Bad connections from manufacturer.

When separating the mini UHF from the 3/4 UHF, the entire connection end came off of the wire. It did not seem to be crimped on from the factory. Item was returned and will try again.

Good Idea, Poor Execution

I have used FireStik Firering cables before and have been very satisfied with their products, and this is the first bad experience I've had with the FME connector. During installation, the connector pulled completely off the cable. I am very disappointed at the quality of the connector when the same company also gave us the FireRing, which is by far the easiest way to attach an antenna. For the money, go with the cable without the FME connector. It will require bigger holes to pass the cable through, but you won't have to worry about the cable coming apart.
